Why Smart Locks Lock You Out Differently

A keypad lock or RFID-enabled smart key uses batteries, software, or a connected system instead of a mechanical bolt. When something goes wrong—a dead battery, a forgotten PIN, a lost key fob, or a software glitch—you can't pick your way in like you might with a traditional lock. The door simply won't open, even if you have a physical backup key card.

• Know the emergency access method. Ask your Vermieter or property manager for the emergency override code and keep it written down in a safe place at home (not on a note next to the door).
• Replace batteries every six months, even if they seem fine. Mark it on your calendar or set a phone reminder.
• Create a digital backup. If the lock uses an app or keycard, set up a second user account or register a backup device. Give a trusted friend or family member access if possible, in case you're locked out while away.
• Keep documentation. File away the lock manual, the lock model number, and the contact details for the property manager. When you move, take photos of the lock for reference.
• Test the physical backup regularly. If your smart lock came with a mechanical key override, use it once a month to make sure it still works and you haven't lost it.

If the lock is aging or fails repeatedly, suggest to your Vermieter that they upgrade it. Many landlords are willing to install newer, more reliable systems, especially if repeated lockouts are creating complaints.

Your Rental Agreement and Insurance

In Germany, your Mietvertrag (rental agreement) and your Hausratversicherung (tenant's contents insurance) may cover accidental lockouts, but only in certain circumstances. In many cases, if you cause the lockout through loss or damage, you may be liable for the cost of the locksmith and any damage to the lock itself.
